Theorizing Race in and through Asia

A RIH-funded Interdisciplinary Research Project

Asia represents a vital terrain for examining racialized relations and discourses that transcend Euro-American analytical frameworks. This initiative offers a dedicated platform for researchers to share their work on racialization in Asia and to foster meaningful collaboration.

To decenter and complicate Western theories of “race,” the Theorizing Race in and through Asia initiative aims to build a network of CUHK faculty, postgraduate students, and other scholars in Hong Kong. The goal is to facilitate the exchange of ideas and develop new theoretical approaches and methodologies for studying racialization processes through distinctly Asian historical, ethnographic, legal, literary, and linguistic materials.

This initiative will also enhance the visibility of race studies at CUHK by organizing an international workshop and showcasing the work of its members on a dedicated webpage. These efforts will help foster global collaborations and attract international RPG students interested in this field. Additionally, members will curate a list of pedagogical resources on racialization in Asia, which can be used to decolonize existing courses or develop new ones.
