This talk provides a vital look into cultural heritage conservation, focusing on how we preserve and stabilise historical objects for future generations. We will explore key conservation principles using real-world examples, including the delicate Neolithic plaster statues from Ain Ghazal, Jordan, and their unique preservation challenges. The talk will also highlight the crucial role of conservation during active excavations, covering emergency stabilisation and environmental factors.
Following the talk, there will be a two-hour hands-on workshop which offers a fascinating dive into the world of ancient papyrus conservation. You will learn about papyrus as a material and then get to conserve your own “aged” papyrus. The workshop will guide you through the intricate processes of consolidating flaking pigments and repairing tears on fragile fragments. This is a unique chance to gain a tangible understanding of the meticulous care required to preserve these invaluable historical artifacts.
